The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not only his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
